Shades come with a removable plastic insert to allow use with a UK or European fitting. 
 
Shades are backed with a white PVC flame retardant liner and I recommend using an energy saving bulb with them. They use less energy and are cool to the touch, avoiding the problem of scorching shades and ceilings.
